Architects and Engineers Look to Central Drinking Water Chillers
India is second only to China as the world’s most densely populated nation and is expected to grow substantially in the future. So the architects and engineers who designed Terminal 3 in the country’s largest airport, Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport, kept that in mind. They also timed the completion to coincide with the opening of the 2010 Commonwealth Games also known as the “Friendly Games” (uniting the Commonwealth family through sport) which was being held in Delhi, India.
Terminal 3 is a state-of-the-art building, and is one of the world’s largest passenger terminals providing both international and domestic flights. It is a nine level building that occupies 5.4 million square feet (over 20 acres), with a capacity to handle 34 million passengers annually.
Over 90% of the airport’s passengers use this terminal. So what is the most efficient way to dispense chilled, purified drinking water to all these thirsty travelers?
With such high demand, the maintenance requirements for a large number of point of use (POU) electric water coolers (EWCs) was not practical or economical. In an airport, efficiency, flow, and reliability are key factors in any airport system, and the drinking water service is no exception. For these reasons, the decision to use central drinking water chiller/purifiers was made. As a result, the water chiller maintenance would be centralized to select locations, serving multiple outlets.
The design team divided the terminal into manageable sections, and ultimately sized a variety of Filtrine central chiller models to serve each area based on the expected population and traffic. All of the Filtrine chiller/purifiers served potable outlets throughout the terminal, including Filtrine Model 107-16-HL stainless steel non-recessed drinking fountains, which greatly added to the modern aesthetics of the terminal interior.
The total amount of Filtrine remote chillers in the terminal is 46 including Models ES-25, ES-40, ES-50, ES-60 and ES-100 serving 73 drinking fountains. This makes it the largest installation of Filtrine drinking water equipment in India. Even larger installations can be found throughout the Middle East in schools, universities and municipal buildings. In the US in the Pentagon, one of the world’s largest office buildings, you will find only Filtrine remote chillers and drinking water fountains serving about 26,000 employees, both military and civilian.
